I’ve been off the grid in Alaska for nearly a month now photographing the salmon fishermen of Bristol Bay, Alaska. I can’t wait to develop this film and hope that my digital files make the trip after my backup hard drive failed… probably due to jarring skiff rides across the bay. More pics and hopefully a more regularly updated blog will come.

A big stack of magazines were in my mailbox upon arrival back in Portland. China’s Photographer’s Companion Magazine August, Monster Children issue #16 (australia) with a nice cover by Mike Giant and RE:UP the photography issue all had interviews and/or photo spreads of my fishin pictures. I’m especially honored to have my photos in the same mag with Glen E. Friedman… who is a long time hero.

This was my second inclusion in juxtapoz this year. Man, I feel lucky. What a great cover by Shepard Farey.

Man, its been awhile. King crab season was calm and lovely for the most part but the crab were skiddish and it took twice as long to catch our quota. Two weeks instead of one? I’ve got nothing to complain about. Lots of news! But I’ll save it for the next post.

From the long journey: Dutch Harbor to Seattle a few weeks ago.
We’re still in Alaska and have just completed our third tour for Opilio Crab aboard the Rollo. Tonight we leave for the Pribilof Islands to hunt the illusive Bairdi Crab. There is no money to be made off this lousy crab and we are in for possibly a “hell on earth” experience. At least my kitty is on board to contort and hang upside-down for entertainment. This month Blackpool Magazine out of Paris has printed a large portfolio of my images. I haven’t seen it yet, but appears to be a great mag which, like Fecal Face, mixes art with a touch of skateboard culture.

On temporary eye injury sick leave in Anchorage, AK. Nothing permanent though. I’ve got some photos up at Tim Barber’s Tiny Vices installation in Paris. Check it out. I’m in and out of email contact for 3 more weeks so sorry if I haven’t responded. Also, my good buddy Aubrey Hays has a new website of photos. Check it out here.

Hi, our sister ship the f/v Arctic Hunter ran into a big rock and so the Rollo is holed up in Dutch Harbor helping out as well as ducking some fierce storms here in the Bering Sea. By the way, here is the new Rollo boat kitty. She’s been in heat for 8 strait days and is worn out.
Blizzard and Storm Warning today, but tomorrow we ship out in search of Opilio Crab near the Pribilof Islands. By the way, the Irish Skipper Magazine has republished my October cover story for National Fisherman on the web. Now you can read it here. In other News, I just finished shooting the very entertaining crew of the Time Bandit for the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.
Tomorrow, I will join the Rollo for about 7 weeks of crab fishing in the Bering Sea. If you’d like to send me or the others a cookie or letter or a fresh pair of dry socks we would love it! Here’s our address until early February:
